Children’s Workshop Cooking of Mediterranean Diet

Its aim is to encourage a change of eating habits for childrens toward a healthier way based on a healthy diet and recovery of physical activity in children.

Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food and the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, have jointly launched a series of initiatives that aim to train, educate and promote the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and its products among consumers in general and the children in particular. Among the various activities being carried out highlights the Kids Cooking Workshop of Mediterranean Diet which takes place in schools.

In this month, it will be carried out in different Spanish provinces, the implementation of these workshops, Toledo being one of the cities where they will teach, and where more than 2,300 primary schoolchildren will enjoy this.

For this reason, today this workshop has been presenting in Toledo, with the participation of the Assistant Director for Food Planning and Control MAPA, Isabel Bombal, the Director of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, Joan Castells and Director of Food Markets of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Junta de Castilla La Mancha, Federico Lopez.

Kids Cooking Workshop of Mediterranean Diet encourages a change in eating habits of children toward a healthier way based on a healthy diet in the recovery of physical activity in children and a new method for children to join to the kitchen.

This presentation outlined the motivations and objectives of this campaign as well as educational materials given to the children involved including the book "Learn to Cook in Family: 50 recipes from the Mediterranean Diet" winner of the 2006 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in the category Best Cookbook for Children and Families in Castilian and finalist for the award worldwide Beijing, China.

This book will enable children and parents enjoy the cuisine, offering a variety of recipes and fun designs with which children will be familiar and, most importantly, eat a variety of foods. It also provides a review of nutritional prescription, as well as a glossary of cooking and nutrition.

The campaign is complemented by a lecture-seminar for parents and teachers of participating children, through the MAPA in each school, which will be taught by nutrition specialists at the College of Pharmacists of Toledo, which will guide them on the Mediterranean diet and given the known activity with the children in the workshop and how to use teaching materials at home.
