Using CBD to take care of your health

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabis-derived compound that differs from THC in that it is, inter alia, non-psychotropic. In other words, it retains the multiple health benefits claimed by its promoters, without altering the perception of reality or generating dependency. It is precisely this characteristic that led the FDA to move Epidiolex, an almost pure formula of CBD, from list I to list V, the least dangerous drugs, in 2018 (1).

Benefits of CBD

According to research in recent years, CBD has therapeutic properties that can replace pharmacy products that generate harmful side effects. For example, it relieves chronic pain in cancer patients (2). It also fights depression, anxiety and even inflammation (3, 4, 5).

The United States government has funded studies that concluded that CBD is valid for therapies in neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy, among others (6, 7, 8). Also to combat arthritis, an autoimmune disease. Those who suffer from heart problems would also find relief in the use of CBD, along with neuropsychiatric diseases, metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes, and skin diseases.

CBD is even thought to enhance the effects of THC in the fight against brain cancer (9). And if, as these studies indicate, it stimulates the growth of new cells in the brain, it would be an element to take into account against any degenerative disease.

CBD oil

Pre-clinical studies assure that CBD oil balances the body by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, like a kind of conductor. Its effect -which lasts several hours- occurs about one hour after consumption. The oral route has the longest lasting effect, while with the sublingual route we will achieve a faster but shorter effect.

When buying this oil, it is important to differentiate it from so-called “cannabis oil”, which often has high THC levels and is therefore illegal in many countries. CBD oil, on the other hand, is approved in the United States and Europe as long as it complies with strict regulations.

CBD creams

Feeling good is usually related to looking good, and vice versa. That’s why CBD therapies also include moisturizers, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial creams. That is, we can use this compound directly on the skin to fight psoriasis and stimulate healthy cells with vitamin A. Or fight atopic dermatitis. Or even acne.

CBD supplements

CBD supplements are intended for those who spend a lot of time indoors, without enjoying the benefits of prudent sun exposure. These supplements stimulate the melatonin receptors and help to reduce anxiety and therefore sleep at night.

A new field

Although much remains to be known and researched about CBD, its use in pharmacology offers an encouraging picture for all of us.
