What is Reflexology?

Published: 09/03/2005 - Updated: 08/14/2019

In feet and hands there are areas that are reflective of each component of the body. The performance on these areas can help improve the functions of organs and apparatus, to restore the lost balance or oppose the aggression of agents capable of developing diseases.

The idea of seeing summarized in a circumscribed part of the body all the components of the body and can change its state through interventions is a limited part to a projection that is quite widespread in both East and West.

Zonal massage experts share the concept. They are convinced that in the feet and hands there are areas representative of all other body parts, which are connected via nerve. They also consider that as a result of adverse environmental influences, it can record a huge accumulation of salts of calcium and uric acid crystals in the nerve endings of the feet, blocks and thus altering the normal stimulation of glands and organs. Certain massage can help to eliminate these crystals and salts, thereby returning the bodies to their normal stimulation and thus the ability to recover in a short time their normal functions.

History

The historical origins dating back massage area, inevitably, to Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine who lived in the century V and was defender of massage in general. However, there are no examples around us of illustrious men who have performed very well with the massage area, including Benvenuto Cellini (15OO-15), who apparently fought all kinds of pain a strong pressure on the fingers and toes.

However, the current management of the massage area is recent work of American physician William H. Fitzgerald (1872 1942), which began to share the theories and practical results in 1 ~ 3. According to the author, the human body is traversed in the longitudinal, ten meridian, which divided into many zones, each occupied by certain bodies whose "reflection" can be found in clearly defined areas of the feet and the hands. This thinking has been many variants, especially in terms of massage technique of the different areas of the feet and hands, which have no specific indication can each follow their own guidelines.

Classification of Reflexology

The modern Reflexology has been classified depending on the place where they consider or attempt microreflex areas, so that we can see the following classes:

Iridology: It is the knowledge and application in the diagnosis of diseases, microreflex areas in the iris of the eye, which correspond to internal organs, and by changing the structures and the iris color visible, it is possible to obtain information from the state of health of each organ of the body. This method is useful only for diagnostic purposes, because the iris of the eye does not have access to produce any stimulation from the site.

Atrial Reflexology: It is the theory of reflexology applied to the flag of the ears. This method is often used by acupuncturists, especially in prolonged treatments in which needles in the bearing of other sites in the skin would be very annoying to anyone with daily activities.

Reflexology for feet: microreflex of all organs of the body, located in the foot area. This is the most frequently used and most popular of Reflexology.

Reflexology of hand: Exactly the same as above, but applied to the hands.

Reflexology on scalp: In the area where normally every human being has hair on his head, there are many areas microreflex of internal organs and body structures.

Facial Reflexology: As in the area of hair, on the face have also discovered a large number of areas of an equal number of organs, glands and body structures.

Reflexology in the fingers and fingernails: This is a method used in a type of medicine called East in which magnets are used or applied in plants for stimulating specific areas located in fingers and nails.

Reflexology in abdomen: This system is very popular in Japan and Korea and is based on the same principle of all the above.

Reflexology on the skin: In the skin of almost the entire body is located a huge amount of microreflex areas, which have greater application in the system of healing known as oriental origin Acupuncture.

How is it done?

One of the largest growing area of massage, the American FUNICA D. Ingham suggests doing with thumb pressure, printing a movement similar to that used for spraying a sugar cube with the thumb of one hand on the palm of the other. First, it is very important to position both the massage and the masseuse. The best, of course, is that the patient lies down with a pillow under the knees and feet resting on the knees of the masseuse, which must be placed in a position to ensure comfort. The movement of the thumb (or fingers) on the part should be massaged slow, deep and circular. However, before you begin massage, the masseuse should become familiar with each foot, taking their hands and manipulate it for at least a minute. At the same time, the patient is prepared for operation with two or three relaxing deep breaths.

Since, presumably, in the massage area is a real energy exchange between massage and massage, a kind of communion, it is also desirable that the latter try to relax and breathe, while the massage, in line with its patient. The possibility that the masseuse load of negative energy from the massage is a constant danger, which nevertheless can be saved by keeping a relatively simple precaution: to imagine that some elbows shines white light and repeated that light is a shield sufficient for complete protection. If, during the massage, while taking all precautions, you feel tired or tense, just away determined to make two movements with the hands, how to get rid of a few drops of water. The act of washing hands after each session and to keep some time in cold water contributes to the relaxation of massage. With regard to the duration of the massage area, we can say that varies depending on whether the action is purely a clear therapeutic or relaxing. In the first case could last even one hour (every half hour walk) in the latter case we must avoid over-stimulation, so that the massage should not exceed fifteen minutes for each foot. It is best to massage a few minutes and then return to it later, during the same session.

Toxins that are released during the massage are removed. To avoid dangerous accumulations is desirable to space the sessions, just as it is advised that each session is followed by a short break or a nap.

Massage equals in hands of feet, but implies greater difficulty with regard to the location of the desired areas. To compensate, the massage hands can be performed virtually anytime and anywhere. And above all, can be done you oneself. This last aspect represents a great advantage. However, it is necessary to know the strategic points, and the movements that must be done with a skill that is acquired only with experience. For all these reasons, the area of the hands massage therapy is excellent in cases of emergency.

Successful treatment depends on the skill with which it is conducted. The basic principle is to reduce tension and facilitate the flow of blood to the affected area. Reflexology, according to their growers, also stimulates the flow of energy fine, which revitalizes the entire body.

Obviously, age and conditions of the person treated significantly influence the speed of healing. If the disorder is longstanding, the replacement of weak and diseased cells is a gradual process. The massage is beneficial for people of all ages, from the very young child to the elderly. For the first one will be enough light rubbing of the foot. The older children need a lighter massage than adults.
