July 16th, 2005, Guadalajara, Pinares of the Duchy of Medinaceli, near the Natura Park of Alto Tajo: A devastating fire sweeps 13,000 hectares of forest and kills 11 people. An area of great ecological value of more than 10 million trees, many of them centuries old. It is considered one of the greatest ecological and human tragedies of our country.

The forest was razed by fire for many years, the livelihood of its inhabitants living in the resin, livestock, timber and forest clearing, among other occupations (intense activity during the years managed to keep our forests safe from fire). But neighbors of the forest had to emigrate in the 60s by the disappearance of resin use and the difficulties for grazing and agriculture.

What is the Sponsor a Tree Foundation?

It is a nonprofit organization that wants to make a major environmental project to create a unique natural space that links the citizen with nature and that is a reflection of its importance to our lives. Awareness and education on natural, environmentally and socially regain the area ravaged by fire is the point of Solanilla Farm Foundation, located in the town of Mazarete, Guadalajara, the epicenter of the fire in July 2005. Sponsor a Tree Foundation was born with the spirit of returning to this area and its people part of life and hope that they were seized by the fire and suffered depopulation in the last 3 decades. The natural area would take more than 50 years to recover, the Foundation seeks to Sponsor a Tree, with the help of all, to shorten the recovery process of this nature in the shortest possible time.

With the assistance and contributions, the Foundation will be responsible for special tasks in the maintenance of forest plantations and the new addition to the environmental awareness among the population. To do this, they rehabilitate and construct various facilities in the area with different objectives: research, education and entertainment, among others. The main objective is to link people with the natural world and promote the maintenance of more than one million trees reforested.

Rayet Foundation, the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha and the Diputación Provincial de Guadalajara are the founder of the Project Entities.

Project

At the heart of the area affected by the fire is located in Dehesa Joint Solanilla farm owned by the Diputación Provincial de Guadalajara. It has an area of 2886 hectares and is home to the former premises of the "Hospice" today in semi-ruins where orphaned children once spent the summer months. This is the place chosen for the development of the business of sponsoring trees. Morphology, topography and all of its facilities make it the ideal location to host a series of buildings dedicated to the exhibition, outreach and education, after an appropriate rehabilitation. It is also an area used for hiking and other activities related to rural tourism

Sponsoring a tree

The Foundation will offer more than a million trees to all who are interested in helping with the recovery of the forest and also rehabilitating existing facilities and providing other to set different actions that provide various services for common good of the region, sponsors and everyone.

What does sponsoring a tree means?

It means the involvement of the individual and of society and nature through a symbolic contribution to help conservation of the forest and the extraordinary performance of this ambitious environmental project.

Any person, company or institution anywhere in Spain or the rest of the world can sponsor a tree. The only requirement is to want to be part of this project. If for any reason any of the trees are destroyed (storms, plagues, etc..) They will be replaced by another.

How to participate?

We believe that the recovery of this forest will be approximately 50 years. With a symbolic contribution of $ 1 per year during this period, for the future care of the forest, you will help to advance the project.

The input can be done at once or in payments of $ 5 per year for ten consecutive years, beginning in the first year.

Companies may participate in the project as partners or sponsors providing constraints by signing an agreement with the objective of preserving the spirit of social attachment. They may also offer to others (employees, customers, suppliers, etc.).

Wow, this is old but if the article says it is taking them 50 years to have again the same tree density then we should do something now, I think I can sponsor at least a dozen of trees or more, and well I hope they still are getting applicants, I will see the webpage right now, thanks for the idea
