Description: A perennial plant of the family Polygonaceae, which reaches 1-2 meters in height. Rhubarb leaves are large and webbed, and abundant rhizome, a characteristic bitter flavor.

Traditional uses: The rhubarb is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of constipation and inflammation of the intestine. For its high content of anthraquinone extracts are traditionally used to treat thrush and other diseases of the oral mucosa and infusions they are used as laxatives. It is also used in purgatives, particularly deworming.

Contraindications: In adequate doses are not to be feared. People who suffer from gout, cystitis and nursing mothers should avoid use.

Curiosities: Rhubarb is one of the oldest plants used for medicinal purposes. It is quoted in the writings of the Chinese emperor Chen Nung, 2700 years BC. It was Dioscorides in the first century A.D. who introduced its use in Europe.
