What is a seed?

The seed (seed) is the small body that is part of a fruit and that has the ability to give life to a new plant. The seeds are produced in the plant by the maturation of an egg from a gymnosperm or an angiosperm. It's amazing how many varieties of food there are...varieties that we've never even heard of, or imagined! I once heard that there used to be THOUSANDS of apple varieties...something like 9,000, and now that number has dwindled down to roughly 2,000 :( I wonder how seeds are standing in that regard...
