The gallbladder is an organ located below the liver and whose shape resembles that of a pear. Its primary function is to store bile, which is produced by the liver to digesti lipids.

When you eat fat, the gallbladder releases bile to help break down those fats so the body can assimilate them. However, bile stored in the gallbladder can settle and form a sludge or solidify, forming the dreaded gallstones.

Why do stones form in the gallbladder?

Gallstones are usually associated with a poor diet. However, certain habits can also lead to their formation.

Prolonged fasting and low-fat diets, for example certain weight loss diets can increase our chance of developing gallbladder biliary sludge or stones.

Gallstones are commonly formed by high levels of cholesterol, mucin, bilirubin, calcium and even some proteins. Here are a few examples of different kinds of gallstones:Cholesterol gallstones.

  • Bilirubinate calcium stones (usually black in colour).
  • Brown stones, usually formed as a result of infections in the biliary system.
  • Mixed stones, usually formed due to calcium salts and bilirubinate.

When there is pain, it is usually recommended to avoid eating fat so as not to stimulate the gallbladder, but this does not usually solve the problem and it is entirely possible that surgery may be required to remove the gallbladder.

Black radish to break up gallstones

Traditionally, there are many remedies used to stimulate the gallbladder and therefore expel gallstones. However, the black radish stands out among these remedies because its effectiveness has been studied scientifically and technically proven.

The study was conducted by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in collaboration with the University of Veracruz, where black radish juice was used to cause the destruction of gallstones in mice was evaluated. The results were positive and as a result have raised interest in developing a radish extract-based product for the treatment of stones in the gallbladder.

The black radish is a variety of radish whose root is black in colour on the exterior face. It also contains metabolites which are believed to help stimulate the gallbladder and have the ability to dissolve the stones and to aid their expulsion from the body.

This radish has traditionally been used to improve liver health as well as alleviate slow digestion, liver congestion, diarrhea, colitis and other digestive ailments.

While the study evaluated the consumption of juice obtained from an extractor, black radish can also be consumed in other ways.

Remedies with black radish

Black radishes can be eaten in different ways to remove gallstones, however, the main part used is the root, and the most common remedies are as follows:

Black radish with oil: While fasting, eat one teaspoon of grated black radish mixed with a teaspoon of olive oil. This should be repeated for 30 days.

Black radish juice: You can use a juice extractor to prepare a couple of radishes with water. However, if you do not have a juice maker/extractor, radishes can be cut into two pieces and blended with water and lemon juice. Drink this preparation in the morning, every day, for up to 20 days.

Other remedies to remove gallstones

There are some other remedies to "cleanse" the gallbladder in addition to the black radish.

Oil and Lemon: A simple and popular remedy is to consume one tablespoon of olive oil with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon on an empty stomach.

The presence of fat can stimulate gallbladder, thus it can also expel bile which is favourable for the removal of gallstones.

Dandelion root: The dandelion, and specifically its root, has been used since ancient times to treat liver problems and to improve the function of the gallbladder. It is said that drinking two cups of dandelion tea each day can help rid the body of stones in the gallbladder.

Precautions

While these remedies can work to treat conditions such as bile build-up and stones in the gallbladder, it is important to note that there are certain risks.

If gallstones are large, an obstruction of the bile ducts can occur: A dangerous situation. It is therefore advisable to evaluate natural methods before you carry them out. If you are experiencing pain of any kind, a medical evaluation is essential.
