A "eco-civic" commitment with concrete results

Six companies are involved in this project, contributing their experience of markets and raising their initiatives for sustainable development.

The research program, initiated in April 2009, is being developed in three phases:

At first, it has made an inventory of the major advances made by the global vineyard area of sustainable development, evaluating the "eco-civic" messages transmitted and the international credit markets that are granted. International best practice and can be implemented at local level between the actors of wine from Languedoc-Roussillon.

The study also will emphasize consumer markets with surveys in the 5 countries where demand is more relevant (France, Germany, UK, Canada, USA).

This is intended to determine the degree of consumer awareness to the problems of sustainable development and the price they would pay to consume wine made following the standards of sustainability.

In parallel, meetings were held with a dozen distributors in order to calibrate both needs as their strategies, present and future, in relation to "sustainable" wines, measuring the degree of acceptance that these wines aroused among professionals and analyze the motives that influence their level of commitment.

Finally, we analyze, in a comprehensive way, sustainable management processes of the wineries most emblematic of the New World (New Zealand, California, Australia, South Africa) considering both production and distribution or consumption.

The results of the study, which concluded in May 2010, will be used in a work on sustainable development to be published later this year.

A proactive participation of all segments of the Languedoc-Roussillon

In line with global movements for protecting the planet, the trade association of the Pays d'Oc has definitely decided to get involved in this project. The desire to harmonize both the management and sustainable message coincides with the wishes of the major international wine.

The combination of companies, professional organizations and researchers is the ideal ferment for sustainability aspirations.

To carry out this process successfully, they have had to combine the following actions:

  • Group companies in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon (southeast France) involved in sustainable development
  • Mobilizing relevant professional body such as the Inter Oc
  • Relying on the expertise of international researchers
  • Creating a Steering Committee composed of specialists in the wine world and sustainable development

Hall on the occasion of Wines and Spirits of the Mediterranean, Vinisud 2010, a conference on sustainable development organized by Inter Oc, will be held on 23 February 2010 at 14.30 in Hall 10 the Exhibition of Montpellier.
Then there will be a tasting on stand A70 – Hall 1.

I love wine!! I visited some of my friends in southern california and they took me to an organic winery. It was so cool because we got to tour the vineyard AND test their wines in the the cutest little testing barn. They had the whole thing put together very well, and showed us their entire biodynamic process. It was amazing!
