Francisco Javier Maté highlights the role of organic agriculture in the maintenance of biodiversity and heritage of the Spanish food at the opening of Bioculture.

ADG Food Quality and Promotion of MAPA in opening Bioculture:

  • Spain ranks eighth in the world and fourth in European production, with nearly one million hectares of Organic production
  • It corresponds perfectly to the demand of consumers in terms of quality and food safety

November 4th, 2005. The Assistant Director of Food Quality and Promotion, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Francisco Javier Maté has highlighted the role of organic agriculture in the maintenance of biodiversity, agricultural and environmental culture and heritage food, at the opening of the XXI edition of Bioculture, Fair of Alternatives and responsible consumption, which is held in Madrid until November 7th.

Organic agriculture is a method of agricultural production that provides differentiated quality food while maintaining and even increasing the safety of the natural environment, this has reminded the Deputy Director of MAPA, in which Spain is the eighth in the world and the fourth European, very close to one million hectares devoted to organic production.

Also Javier Maté added that this mode of production corresponds perfectly to the growing demands of consumers in terms of quality and safety, thanks to the transparency of information and control systems through traceability their food chain.

But it is also necessary to emphasize that there is a problem of knowledge of organic production and accessibility to these products.

On the other hand we must not forget, has continued the Assistant Director of the MAPA, that the market development in Spain is the base of the natural growth of this sector, with its involvement in the distribution under specific contractual arrangements, promoted and encouraged by the Administration.

In this strengthening, issues such as information, advocacy, or the integration of organic agriculture in the Rural Development Policy in conjunction with an effort in research, are key at this time and will be attended from the MAPA, through its Directorate General of Agricultural and Food Industry.

Wow! That is so interesting to know!! I knew that Spain was taking extreme efforts at creating organic agriculture a large part of their production, but wow, 4th in the EU! I would really be interested to know which other countries were up there in ranking, to see how Spain compares on the international scale.
