What is asthma?

The word asthma originates from a Greek word meaning panting. Asthma is a disability that doesn’t let you breathe properly.

What happens in the body of a person with asthma?

In a healthy person, when inhaled air passes through the lungs through the airways called bronchioles. The lungs contain millions of bronchioles, which lead to the alveoli, which are microscopic sacs that perform the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

In a person with asthma, the airways undergo certain changes when exposed to allergens or other environmental factors that cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and / or shortness of breath (dyspnea).

Asthma and Allergy

People with asthma are allergic individuals, i.e. they will react more sensitive than usual, even exaggerated, to external factors. This is the main cause that makes an asthmatic child cannot breathe. Why? Because the immune system recognizes certain harmless substances as dangerous there in the environment.

The airways narrow in asthmatic children

The airways, in a normal person, respond by narrowing when exposed to allergens or irritants, however, can breathe deeply relaxing the airways and making it flow oxygen, their breathing is not obstructed. On the other hand, in asthmatics, the airways that are clogged do not relax, this is what causes wheezing and a feeling of suffocation, because the airways become inflamed in response to system immune, recognizing that some danger is present and defend the airways swelling to keep out the alleged danger. In this defense, the airways fill with thick, sticky mucus, which gives the symptom of wheezing or coughing up phlegm.

Some asthma medications are taken orally, but most are inhaled. The use of inhalation devices can pose special problems in some children. Most children over five years can use an inhaler, which allows that a precise dose of medication is delivered directly to the lungs, but adults should monitor this administration. Avoid drugs, sometimes help in critical cases, but abusing them weakens the body's natural responses.
